New Zealand Adventures Friday, November 21 7:30 program Speaker: Leslie Clapp Location: Blue Hill Library NOTE: The social hour for this event will take place from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at the new Bird Watcher’s Store and Café at 37 Water Street in Blue Hill. Owners Jim and Carol Upton invite Downeast Audubon members to come in and browse, socialize and share a glass of wine or punch before the evening program at 7:30 at the library. During the winter of ’07 Leslie Clapp and Blaise deSibour traveled to New Zealand where they spent 5 weeks in nature’s playground. Part of the time was spent “tramping” on the South Island’s Milford and Routeburn Tracks- known as 2 of the world’s great walks. The couple rented a car for the remainder of the trip and explored areas around Mt. Cook in the Southern Alps, coastal fishing towns, and the golden beaches of Abel Tasman National Park before taking the ferry to the North Island. Here, they found a completely different landscape with volcanoes, geothermal areas and magnificent limestone caves. This was a trip jam-packed with high adventure (jet boat rides, glacier climbing, cave tubing…), spectacular scenery, and there was even time to squeeze in some bird watching. Join us for an exciting slide show with music, bird songs and interesting commentary. return to sightings |

Christmas Bird Count We need volunteers to participate in the 109th Christmas Bird Count which occurs every winter from December 14 to January 5. There will be four individual counts within our chapter’s area and we hope you will join a team or, if you live within a count circle, keep a tally of birds seen at your feeders during count day. Help contribute to the longest running survey in ornithology, with over 100 years of compiled data. Log on to www.audubon.org/bird/cbc for more information.
